What is limestone made of?
Limestone is primarily made of calcium carbonate and may contain magnesium carbonate otherwise known as dolomite. Some of the other minerals also include clay, iron carbonate, feldspar, pyrite and quartz.

How Does Limestone Form?
Limestone is a sedimentary rock which means it is formed from small particles or minerals that settled in the water and compacted by pressure. There are a couple of ways that limestone forms. The first is in the ocean; organisms such as oysters, clams, mussels, and coral use calcium carbonate to make their shells. When these organisms shed their shells or perish, waves break down the shells, and the particles settle on the ocean floor where water pressure compacts.

How Do You Take Care Of Limestone?
The first thing you should do in taking care of your limestone is to ensure that it has been sealed. Sealing your limestone surfaces closes the pores, which helps to protect from spills and other damage. Its recommended to sweep or vacuum any dust and debris off your surfaces daily and using a special limestone cleaner with a mop or soft cloths weekly. Its recommended that you avoid abrasive cleaning tools like scrubbing bruises and scouring pads that can scratch your stone’s surface and remove the sealant. Remove all spills quickly and never use acidic cleaners or household lemon or vinegar as this will etch the top of your surface. Limestone is largely made of calcium carbonate that will fizz or bubble when it comes in contact with acids.

Where is limestone found?
The Limestone products we use in the home are mined from open quarries around the world and here in Australia. Limestone makes up 10% of all sedimentary rocks and forms in ocean environments rich with crustaceous life.

What is limestone used for?
Limestone has a wide range of uses and throughout history, it has been used to create lime mortar, build the pyramids in Egypt, and create the lime cement as a base for the Roman roads. Today lime still has a wide range of uses and includes:
Building material
Concrete
Aggregate
White pigment in toothpaste or paints
For the production of lime
Soil conditioner
Tiles
Benchtops
pavers

How are Limestone tiles made?
Limestone is quarried from open mines and cut as large slabs, transported to processing facilities where they use special saws to cut the slabs into tiles. The tiles are all cut to the same thickness and then have their finish applied before shipping worldwide.

Can limestone be used outside?
Yes, limestone can be used outside as pavers or tiles and is a very common poolside choice.

Can limestone be repaired?
If your limestone surface has cracked, pitted, etched or stained, don’t despair. We can repair and restore your limestone surface.

Can limestone stain?
Yes, limestone is a naturally porous material that absorbs. You can prevent stains by sealing your stone, removing spills quickly and not leaving moist or rusted items on the surfaces.
