Sandstone Pool Paver Cleaning

Sandstone Pool Surround Paver & Tile Cleaning Brisbane & Gold Coast

Sandstone Pool Surround Cleaning Brisbane & Gold Coast

Transform your outdoor space with expert sandstone cleaning and sealing.

At Marble Everlast, we’ve been restoring the natural beauty of sandstone pool surrounds for over 20 years. Whether your pavers are dull, stained, or overrun by algae, our team brings them back to life with a proven process that combines deep cleaning, careful stain removal, and professional sealing.

Why Sandstone Deserves Specialised Care

Unlike concrete or generic pavers, sandstone is a premium surface that requires careful handling. Its porous nature makes it vulnerable to staining, algae build-up, and permanent damage if not properly sealed. But when cared for correctly, sandstone transforms into a showpiece—elevating the look of your entire pool area.

Our Sandstone Cleaning Process

Our thorough cleaning service includes:

  • Site prep & debris removal – Leaves, garden debris, and bird droppings are cleared.
  • Targeted cleaning solutions – We apply pool-safe chemicals designed specifically for sandstone.
  • Machine scrubbing – Using specialised floor scrubbers, we lift years of grime and organic buildup.
  • Careful pressure washing – Adjusted based on the condition of the stone to avoid joint damage.
  • Neutralising rinse – A bicarb soda-based solution neutralises chemical residues and balances pH.
  • Premium sealing – We apply 2–3 coats of high-quality sealer, including optional colour-enhancing formulas.

“Once it’s cleaned and sealed properly, sandstone looks like chalk and cheese compared to before.” – Mark, Marble Everlast

Common Issues We Fix

  • Black mould and algae
  • Permanent staining from leaves and bird droppings
  • Deterioration due to lack of sealing
  • Salt and water damage
  • Loose or missing grout and cracked tiles

If stains are too deep to clean, we can also replace individual tiles (subject to availability).

Sealing: The Key to Long-Term Protection

Unsealed sandstone is vulnerable to permanent staining and erosion. Our sealing services help:

  • Repel water and prevent algae growth
  • Reduce maintenance and cleaning needs
  • Prolong the life and appearance of your stone
  • Enhance colour and pattern with optional enhancement sealers

“There’s no point cleaning sandstone if you’re not going to seal it. Sealing is what protects your investment.” – Mark, Marble Everlast

Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

After your professional clean, we recommend:

  • Regular leaf blowing – Prevent organic build-up.
Light monthly hose down – Avoid using pressure washers, which can weaken the sealant.
  • Spot cleaning bird droppings quickly
  • Using our bio-friendly stone soap – We provide a premium cleaner/sealer blend ideal for interior or patio sandstone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does pressure washing damage sandstone?
Only if done incorrectly. High-pressure systems can blast out grout or damage fragile stone. We use adjusted settings to ensure safe results.

Is chlorine or bleach safe for sandstone?

When used carefully and diluted properly, yes—but improper use can cause severe damage to both the stone and surrounding surfaces.

How often should sandstone be cleaned?

We recommend a professional clean every 2–3 years, depending on usage. Light monthly maintenance can keep it looking its best in the meantime.

Recent Work: Gold Coast Pool Revival

One of our recent clients hadn’t cleaned their sandstone in over 15 years. It was heavily weathered and dull. After a deep clean, stain treatment, repairs, and application of a colour-enhancing sealer, the transformation was stunning. The client was thrilled to see their Himalayan sandstone’s natural colours restored.

Interview with Mark – Sandstone Pool Surround Cleaning Expert at Marble Everlast

How long have you been cleaning sandstone around pools?

I’d say around 15 to 20 years.

What types of sandstone surfaces do you usually work on?

Mainly pool pavers. That’s the most common around pools.

What makes sandstone different to clean compared to something like concrete?

Sandstone’s a more prestige material—people usually spend more on it compared to concrete. And when it’s cleaned properly, it really shows. The difference is like chalk and cheese. It comes up beautifully.

Can you walk us through your typical cleaning process for sandstone around pools?

First, we remove any leaves and debris—either by vacuum or blower. Then we apply a specialised cleaning chemical that’s suitable for sandstone. We let that sit for a bit, then we machine scrub it using a floor scrubber. After that, we power wash it—though this step depends on whether we have to do any sandstone repairs. If we do, power washing is done in conjunction. Once it’s all washed, we rinse it with a neutralising solution, and then apply two to three coats of a premium-grade sealer.

Do you use eco-friendly or pool-safe products?

We do use a neutraliser—something like a bicarb soda solution—to balance the chemical side of things. Because when there’s heavy staining or algae, especially from built-up garden debris, you need stronger chemicals to get results. But after that, we rinse everything thoroughly with a neutraliser that’s safe for pools and gardens.

What are the most common problems you see with sandstone pool areas?

The main issues are algae, leaf stains, and garden waste—especially when the area hasn’t been maintained. We often turn up to jobs where nothing’s been done for 10 or 15 years—no sealing, no upkeep. That’s when the problems set in. If the sandstone hasn’t been sealed, it becomes really prone to permanent staining.

What kind of issues can you get from not sealing the sandstone?

You can end up with permanent stains that just won’t come out. It becomes really obvious when some areas are stained and others aren’t. It affects the overall appearance of the space.

Is there anything you can do for those permanent stains?

If the stains won’t lift, we can replace some tiles—maybe 10 or 20 if needed. But it depends on the age and availability of the tile. If it’s been down for 15–20 years, chances are the exact tile isn’t made anymore. Matching can be tricky.

How do you deal with stubborn stains or mould without damaging the stone?

Some of the products we use come from suppliers who specialise in tough stain removal. If their strongest stuff won’t lift the stain, it usually means nothing will. And we’re careful with pressure washing because sandstone can be fragile. Too much pressure and you can blast out the grout or damage the stone—especially if it’s already brittle or hasn’t been sealed.

Have you had a particularly tough sandstone job?

Yes—one customer had about 200 tiles that needed replacing. It was just too far gone. Jobs like that are tough—not just technically, but physically. You’re out there on your hands and knees in the sun all day. But for most jobs, around 80% of the time, the sandstone will clean up nicely and take a good sealer.

How often should sandstone around pools be cleaned?

We usually tell customers to keep up with basic maintenance—blow away leaves regularly and give it a light hose maybe once a month. But for professional cleaning and sealing, every two to three years is a good guide, depending on how much the area is used.

Why is sealing sandstone important?

There’s no point cleaning it if you’re not going to seal it. Sealing helps close the pores in the stone and protects it from water, stains, and algae. It makes ongoing maintenance easier and really helps with water repellency. You can actually see the water bead on the surface when it’s sealed properly.

What happens if someone skips sealing after a clean?

They’ll likely have the same issues again in about six months. The stains and algae will return much quicker.

What tips do you give homeowners for looking after their sandstone between professional cleans?

Blow away any leaves or garden waste as soon as you see it. Give it a rinse with a garden hose every so often—but don’t use a power washer, because that can damage the sealer. If there are droppings—bat or bird—just hose them off gently.

What kind of feedback do you get from customers?

Most people are really happy with the results. There’s a clear transformation with sandstone. The before-and-after difference is huge, and you can really see the stone come back to life.

Can you share a recent sandstone pool job?

Sure—we did one on the Gold Coast where the pool hadn’t been cleaned or sealed for about 15 years. It was badly weathered—sun, rain, dirt, all of it. After cleaning, we gave them the option of a standard or enhanced sealer. They chose the enhancer, which really brought out the colours of the Himalayan sandstone. The patterns and tones came back beautifully, and the customer was stoked with how it turned out.

What sets Marble Everlast apart from other companies?

We really listen to what the customer wants and try to go the extra mile. If they need help finding a matching tile, I’ll actually go out and try to source it. And when it comes to moving outdoor furniture and setting up—most companies won’t do it, but we do. I always tell people we’re not insured for lifting, but the boys usually jump in and help anyway. That personal service makes a difference.

Does pressure washing damage sandstone?

It depends on the pressure. If you’re using hot water and high PSI, you can blow out grout and joints—especially on older or unsealed stone. Pressure washing has to be done carefully, and most of the heavy lifting should be done by the chemicals, not brute force.

Is it safe to use chlorine or bleach on sandstone?

It can be, but you’ve got to be really careful around surrounding areas—like glass, furniture, or any soft materials. If it’s used improperly, it can bleach and damage anything nearby. And yes, if the wrong ratio is used, it can damage the sandstone itself too.

What’s the best way to remove mould and algae?

We use specialist algae and spot removers from our suppliers. If that doesn’t work, nothing will—and at that point, you might need to replace the tile.

How long does a typical sandstone pool clean take?

Anywhere from two to three days depending on the size and condition.

Do you recommend any DIY products for in-between cleans?

We’ve got a product we leave with customers—a bio-friendly stone soap that also has a sealer in it. It’s perfect for interior or patio sandstone. They can just mop with it once a month, and it helps maintain the stone while keeping the sealer topped up. It’s a win-win.
