What is a Standard Restoration Process For Most Stone Types
The stone restoration process varies depending on your stone type, finish and state of the stone, but for a standard stone restoration project, the stages would follow this process:
- Tape and mask off the area
- Deep clean scrub with a floor machine
- Identify damage and repair – filling cracks and holes
- Resurface with diamond pads on the floor machine (not applicable for slate)*
- Restore to the chosen finish
- Complete with a stone sealant to close the pores and help protect the surface from staining
*Resurfacing with diamond pads is not applicable to slate floors due to how thin they are.

What is slate made of, and how does it form?
Slate is a fine-grained homogeneous metamorphic rock that was originally shale, mudstone sedimentary rock of clay or volcanic ash. Depending on the metamorphism process the composition of slate is clay minerals or micas. Slate is found when sedimentary basins become involved in the tectonic environment of a convergent plate boundary. Horizontal forces with minor heating compress and modify the clay minerals from the shale and mudstone to produce the final product of slate.
How do you take care of slate?
We recommend using a broom and dust mop daily for the general cleaning of slate daily, then once per week using a damp mop. A sealer is typically recommended every three to five years or as advised by your stone dealer.
Where is slate found?
Slate is mainly quarried in Spain and Brazil and commonly found in the USA, Britain and Asia.
What is slate used for?
Most of the slate mined through the world is used to produce roofing tiles but is also commonly used as flooring. It works well as roofing and flooring because it absorbs minimal moisture and stands up well in contact with freezing water. A downfall for roofing is its cost in comparison to other modern roofing materials. Slate is also used for interior flooring, dimension stone and decorative aggregate.
